2: Side Mission

“Are you serious? Ha! These guys are weird, do they actually act like this?”

The phone screen flickered as I watched the trainee survival show. As I watched, I couldn't help wonder why people liked watching these guys exaggerate their every reaction.

“It's part of being a trainee, they want to debut after all.”

  I scoffed.

“Yea but do people actually like watching this? I mean it's obviously an act.”

“It is but it's fun to watch.”

I looked at the girl laying her head on my lap. It had been a couple days since I got out of the hospital, and in that time, I found out this was Minwoo’s Sister.

Her name was Rae Sooah, it looked like she was younger than Minwoo, she was shorter than him about, 165 cm, and had the same dark black hair as him too, though hers was longer reaching to her shoulders, she had a sad look to her face with a soft expression.

As I spent the last few days with her, I got to know her more, how she acted with me. It was obvious that even before the day that I was put into this body she had been taking care of Minwoo.

Even now she was taking care of me and staying close.

  I felt disgusted.

Not at her, but at myself. While I was here with her head laying on my lap acting like her brother, I wondered what happened to the real Minwoo.

The system never explained what had happened to him. Was he dead? Maybe this was the punishment he put on me as he watched. I don't know.

The thought made me exhale through my nose.

Sooah shifted slightly while laying on my lap. She was laying there just looking at me. It felt uncomfortable, she was too comfortable with me too close.

But I couldn't just push her away, she was my “sister”.

I looked at her and gave her a slight smile.

“So do you think I could become an Idol?”

She sat up and looked at me.

“I mean, just off your looks, probably not. You don't look ugly just not that striking. You're just sort of average right now.”

  I let out a chuckle.

  “Yea I thought so.”

I didn't think Minwoo looked that bad, but she had a point compared to those guys on the phone it wasn't comparable.

“But, that's not all it takes to be one. You also have to know how to sing and dance.”

I laid back and put my hands on my face, sliding them down while sighing. Even if it wasn't just about looks, if what the system had shown was true then my dance and vocals weren't that good either.

“Hey, how about we see how good you are.”

I looked at her with a confused look, then she raised her hand with tv control on it. Still confused by what she meant, I looked as she turned it on and went on MeTube and looked up an Idol song karaoke version.

“No, I don't want to sing.”

My stats weren’t any good right now, there was no point if I already knew how bad I was.

  “Cmon just once, please?”

“I already know I sound bad; there's no point.”

She made a sad expression when I said that but, I really didn't want to embarrass myself. At Least that's what I wanted. Just before Sooah could turn the tv off a shining screen appeared.

  [Side Mission]

Failure: Minus 5 days to Main Mission

  Time: 10 minutes

  Rewards: +1 stat point

Notes: Don't be such a downer, make your sister happy

  Fuck.

My jaw clenched, minus 5 days wasn't something I could afford right now, I needed to train and get ready every day was crucial.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

I looked over the screen again

  Rewards: +1 stat point

This really is like a game huh. I put my hand on my neck and rubbed it. If I did this, I could probably raise one of my stats right?

  “Minwoo?”

I looked at Sooah, she still had the controller in her hand with her thumb hovering on the power button.

“Fine— just put a song on already.”

  Her eyes widened in surprise.

  “Really?”

I pinched in between my eyes; I really didn't want to sing but I had no other choice.

  “Yea just— just hurry up.”

Her lips turned into a smile, she turned around and started scrolling through the songs.

I didn't know any of them.

After a while of scrolling, she stopped on one.

“How about this one, it been pretty popular recently, Love song by Zone 3”

Love song by Zone 3, I've never heard of them before. I really didn't want to do this, but I had to.

  “Well, are you ready?”

I stared at the screen looking at the beginning lyrics.

  “Yea.”

As the song began, I exhaled and forced myself to sing.

Come here, hurry all I need is you by me

Strangely I see all the tears caused by me

Made it seem like our end

Sorry but I can't just be a friend

Please will you come to me

I can't sleep at night unless you're in my dreams

As I sang, I couldn't help but wince, I didn't know what was off with my voice, but I knew I wasn't singing the song right.

  It all just felt off.

I kept going singing the song, at times looking at Sooah, as I reached the chorus my voice cracked, and it looked like Sooah flinched.

Shit when is this going to end

I clenched my hand pushing through the rest of the song. Finally, I reached its end.

I didn't know you could get winded from singing but after singing the whole thing I felt a bit tired.

I looked over to Sooah and asked.

  “So, how was it?”

She looked at me with a serious face, then suddenly she burst out laughing.

“I-Im sorry— I'm sorry I'm not making fun of you, it's just y-you.”

She continued to laugh laying back on the couch.

“Alright, Alright I got it already I wasn't good.”

Was it that funny, I still tried my best.

I let out a long breath, well at least I got something out of it. I looked at the screen in front of me.

  [Side mission Complete]

  Rewards: +1 stat point

Bonus: First time singing +1 vocal point

Notes: Wow where did you learn how to sing? Keke

Yea, yea I get it I'm not good, why does this system even have a personality? Well, it doesn't matter for now, it didn't say anything about a bonus before, but I guess I get it for doing things for the first time.

I guess for now I should raise my vocal again.

Name: Rae Minwoo (Formerly Joon Seok)

  Level: 1

  Title: None

  Vocal: D+ → C

  Dance: F

  Visual: C+

  Talent(s): None

  Characteristics: Social Manipulator, Self Loathing

This really is just like a game.

The more missions I complete the more I would level up

I leaned back on the couch and closed my eyes, maybe this won't be too hard.

I felt Sooah move around on the couch.

“Hey, you really tried right?” she said grinning.

“Of course I did, I had to.”

“Well at least you finished the song fully.”

It wasn't exactly high praise, but I felt her sincerity. If I wanted to become an Idol, I would have to work on my skills more.

Train every day, I had no idea what it took to be one and I couldn't just walk up and demand to be one out right, so I needed to hone my skills.

I looked up and rubbed my neck again, would I be able to do this?

Sooah sighed and looked at me

  “What are you thinking about?”

  “Nothing just tired.”

She frowned and stared at me intently

  “You're weird.”

  “I know.”

“No like, you've been weirder lately, like why do you suddenly want to be an idol? And why haven't we talked about what you did?”

My heart tightened when she said that I sat up and looked at her, did she suspect me? No, she couldn't have, I mean besides my personality I look just like Minwoo. She continued to stare at me.

I didn't know what to say so I got closer to her and hugged her.

“I'm sorry, I really am, I will never do that again.”

At first, she just sat there, then she hugged back tight.

  “Okay.”

As I held on to her, feeling her warmth and heart beating, I looked forward, the screen appeared again.
