Chapter 70

  Another night, another dream.

It starts with a woman (now I somehow know her name is Whisper) saying “This is what it means to be a Nephilim.”

Bat moved silently toward the camp. His companion moved to surround the camp. It was late, the campfire was cold. It had been out for hours. There was a single bedroll by the wagon and no guards. Ever since the king died three years ago, traveling the roads alone is a dangerous business in Kvatata. Bat and his companions were one of the reasons it was dangerous.

Chipri lay in his bedroll waiting for the sun to come up. He didn’t need that much sleep and had awaken when he heard the bandits trying to sneak up on him. Chipri laughed to himself at the bandits’ idea of stealth. The sounds of their footfalls were enough to alert all the wildlife in the area. The bandits coming toward him and meant him harm. Inwardly, he sighed. “Why can’t people just leave me alone?” he thought to himself. When it was beyond deniability they were up to no good, he threw off his blanket and stood up, ready to fight.

The bandits charged as soon as Chipri stood up. The element of surprise was gone, so they rushed him thinking to overwhelm him quickly. It was dark, but Chipri had no problem seeing unlike the bandits. He had perfect night vision ever since he turned into a Nephilim. He saw the bandits rushing toward him, and decided to meet them halfway, making a charge toward a group of two running close together.

He engaged the two, knowing he had to dispatch them quickly before the others would try to overwhelm him. He had a gladius in his right hand and a dagger in his left.

When the two bandits realized he was charging them, they froze for just a few seconds. That was all Chipri needed. He used the knife to slice across the first bandit’s belly, spilling his guts onto the ground, and then stabbed the other in the chest and through the heart with his gladius. Chipri continued on past them, ripping his weapons out for the extra damage and spraying blood all around. Then turned around to face the other three bandits as his victims hit the ground. The other bandits stopped when they saw how easily Chipri dispatched their two fellow bandits. Maybe they had bitten off more than they could chew, Bat thought.

The bandits changed their approach. Instead of trying to overwhelm Chipri, they spread out making it harder to attack more than one and a much more deliberated pace. Their plan was to have one provoke Chipri, then the other two would attack from the back.

Unfortunately for the bandits, Chipri knew the tactic they would use, and used a quick move skill to place himself at the right side of the formation, startling the bandit. Chipri stabbed him in his side with his gladius, then used his dagger to slice up and down the bandit’s left side. The man staggered back and fell down trying to stop the bleeding. He wouldn’t be able to, and was already losing feeling in his lower body. The blood spurt as it came out, indicating Chipri had cut a major artery. The man would die even if Chipri did no further damage. But Chipri didn’t stop and stabbed the man through his heart. Killing him instantly.

  Stolen story; please report.

The remaining two bandits, including Bat, had had enough. Both turned and fled. Heading in different direction, each hoping Chipri would follow the other, giving themselves more time to escape. Honor among thieves wasn’t a thing for these bandits. Running as fast as they could in the dark was not a good idea. The first tripped and fell down after going less than 20 yards. Even worse for him, Chipri had followed him. When the first went down, Chipri was there a second later stabbing him through his throat. The man died choking on his own blood.

Bat was now the last bandit alive. All the others were dead. He knew he could not keep up the pace. He stopped, not because he wanted to but because his stamina was almost out. He did the next best thing he could think of, he hid behind a tree. He slowed his breathing so he could listen for any movement. He prayed the target would stop hunting him. That it would be satisfied with killing the others. He closed his eyes and stayed as silent as he could. Hoping against hope the target wouldn’t find him.

Chipri found him and took his life. He didn’t ask questions, just used his sword to kill him. Bat never even saw or heard him and was dead before he could blink. At least his death was fairly painless he thought to himself as he fell into the blackness of death.

Even though Chipri was tired of killing, he was as cold and efficient as any killer ever was. When he was done, he cleaned the blood off his blade using Bat’s shirt, then walked back to his camp.

Chipri could have let the bandits go when they turned to run. But if he did, they would have attacked someone else. He wasn’t a law keeper or any authority, but he didn’t want to be responsible for another person’s death due to his inactions. So, he chased the last two bandits and killed them.

Chipri returned to his camp before he noticed the notification flag. He pulled it up and read.

Congratulations. You are on the Path of Justice. You are the living concept of Justice. Justice is not the law. Justice is balancing the rights and wrongs. Punishing the wicked and rewarding the just is the mandate of your Path. Kings and Queens may fear Justice, because Justice sees no rank. Peer or pauper, all are treated equal.

Congratulations. With a path selected, you will now receive a quest. For your Path, you will become the epitome of that role. Your quest will reinforce your path and provide you the tools needed to embody it. Your quest, find and correct 12 cases of injustice. Your reward will be dependent upon the degree of the injustices and the difficulty in correcting them.

Ascendence is gained by following your path and defeating your enemies.

Chipri smiles and gathers his equipment. He knew exactly where he needed to go to complete the quest. The city Gomora was rife with sin and injustice. Bringing justice to Gomora would be the first step in his journey on his Path. The Path of Justice.

The woman says “Nephilim gain power through following their path, their Power. Nephilim must fight to improve, fight to live, fight to ascend. Or Nephilim die.”

Then suddenly, I am awake. I am beginning to think these are not normal dreams, if they are dreams at all.
