Chapter 95: The Free Knight Corps

A low-level Transcendent like Charlot, who had condensed four Blood Runes and possessed four extraordinary abilities—Insight, Bloodfme Aura, Swiftstep Technique, and Angel's Thorn—was a rarity among hundreds.

After “resting” at home for three days, Charlot resumed his “diligent” work.

Upon arriving at No. 1 Falcon Street, he conducted a routine inspection.

As a Chief Overseer, it was necessary to know one’s subordinates—not out of pure diligence, but because Charlot feared “assassins” might infiltrate without him noticing.

Charlot keenly observed that the number of employees showing up had increased, surpassing two hundred. Feeling slightly puzzled, he returned to his office and summoned Homonsa.

He had promised to help this girl from the Southern Continent advance as a knight and could not simply do nothing.

Charlot carefully inquired about her training. As he expected, Homonsa had “lost access to education” early. She had not learned a proper Knightly Breathing Technique at a national academy but had instead acquired one from a wandering knight who had passed through her hometown.

This breathing technique was incomplete. Despite seven or eight years of practice, Homonsa had been stuck at the threshold of breaking through her Power Seed, unable to advance.

The Old Continent was not like Earth. On Earth, knowledge was open and accessible through the internet or specialized schools. In Fars Empire, the four imperial universities exchanged knowledge internally, but outside these circles, even the national institutes rarely shared anything. It was incredibly difficult for outsiders to learn a proper Knightly Breathing Technique.

After some contemption, Charlot said, “The technique you’re practicing is the Lamia Breathing Technique. It’s popur on the Southern Continent, but it has significant fws. Over a hundred years ago, a professor improved it and renamed it: Golden Forbidden Fme!”

“I can help you acquire the training manual for Golden Forbidden Fme. Once you correct your breathing technique, I can also find a senior to attempt forcibly infusing you with combat energy to help you break through the Power Seed.”

Charlot was about to help Homonsa pave a path toward Transcendence when he heard a knock at the door. A lively, cheerful voice came from outside his office: “Mr. Mecklenburg, may I come in?”

The voice was very familiar. Charlot quickly responded, “Please, come in!”

A beautiful woman entered his office—her features refined, sharp, and distinctly elegant. Despite her slightly older age, she carried an air of heroic charm. She was none other than Lady Mavis, the Lukavaro District Chief Overseer and an Imperial Chamber Guard, assigned as Charlot's partner according to patrol regutions.

This woman of complex status smiled and said, “Apologies for interrupting.”

Charlot, following etiquette, greeted her politely: “Not at all.” At the same time, he gestured for Homonsa to leave.

Lady Mavis did not spare Homonsa a gnce. After Homonsa departed, Lady Mavis said, “The Lukavaro District City Patrol Guards will soon be reorganized into the Free Knight Corps and could be sent to the battlefield at any time.”

“I still have responsibilities as an Imperial Chamber Guard and cannot accompany the Knight Corps, so I will temporarily resign from the Chief Overseer position. Your new partner should arrive within a few days.”

Charlot was familiar with the empire’s military system. The Fars Empire’s army was divided into five categories, ranked in order of importance: the Royal Knight Corps, directly under the emperor; the Private Knight Corps of the great nobles; the Local Armies; the Free Knight Corps; and the Mercenary Forces.

The Royal Knight Corps, the Private Knight Corps, and the Local Armies were permanent forces. In contrast, the Free Knight Corps were temporary units, assembled during wartime and disbanded after the fighting ended. Mercenaries, on the other hand, were outsourced forces who typically received no pay; instead, they were issued privateering licenses, which allowed them to plunder enemy nations legally during wars.

The City Patrol Guards belonged to the Local Armies and were generally forbidden from leaving their assigned regions. However, during wartime, they could be temporarily assigned the designation of Free Knight Corps to fight on the battlefield, as they were already part of the government’s military framework and did not require additional saries.

Not only the Fars Empire but many countries on the Old Continent preferred reorganizing Local Armies into Free Knight Corps and sending them to the frontlines as expendable forces.

Of course, most Free Knight Corps were not formed from the Local Armies but were purely “temporary militias” that faced dissolution at the end of a war.

It was also worth noting that most detective agencies were officially registered as Mercenary Forces, as were adventurer teams. The City Patrol Guards were the imperial institution responsible for registering and managing detective agencies, mercenary forces, and adventurer teams.

Slightly surprised, Charlot asked, “Who is my new partner?”

Lady Mavis smiled faintly and replied, “I don’t know either.”

“However, you should be more concerned about where the Free Knight Corps will be sent.”

Charlot instinctively asked, “Where will I be sent?”

Lady Mavis answered, “You were born in the Behemoth Principality, so you’ll most likely be sent there to fight against the South Seraph restorationists.”

Charlot frowned slightly. He had no desire to return to the Behemoth Principality. As a transmigrator, the st thing he wanted was to reconnect with his past life and risk being recognized.

However, he quickly thought to himself, “If I return to the Behemoth Principality, I don’t necessarily have to mingle with my old social circles. I can just keep a low profile in the army.”

Lady Mavis continued, “There’s one more matter. Because of the reorganization into the Knight Corps and the likelihood of deployment to the battlefield, you’ve been granted expansion authority. The Lukavaro District City Patrol Guards can now expand to three thousand personnel. Additionally, the empire will provide you with some reinforcements, but the majority of the recruitment will be up to you.”

“I’ve brought you the appointment and transfer orders for the City Patrol Guards and the Free Knight Corps.”

  Lady Mavis smiled without moving.

Charlot understood the subtle implication. He said, “I won’t stop anyone who wishes to leave.”

Many people feared going to war. Those who were collecting saries without doing any real work would seek transfers from the Lukavaro District City Patrol Guards. Lady Mavis’s main purpose in coming here was to speak on behalf of such individuals.

Seeing Charlot’s tactfulness, Lady Mavis smiled and said, “The documents are too heavy. They’re in the carriage. I’ll have the driver bring them up for you shortly.”

Charlot nodded politely. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Lady Mavis gracefully took her leave. A short while ter, her carriage driver delivered a rge leather suitcase filled with appointment and transfer orders.

Recruiting soldiers was a highly troublesome matter for most officers on the Old Continent.

After all, recruiting thousands of soldiers in a short time was an incredibly challenging task.

But for Charlot, this task was surprisingly simple.

He finally understood why so many people had shown up to work today—they were here to handle their transfer procedures.

After sitting in his office for a while, Charlot instructed Mrs. Nancy to prepare his carriage. He then set off for his former workpce—Kilmainham Prison.
