Prologue - Compos Mentis

I awaken with a start from another nightmare. "Hnn..." I mumble as I get up and stretch my legs. The tuft of grass I was sleeping on has an indent from my torso. It takes a moment for me to get my bearings. Oh, hell yeah! We're going to the canyons today!

I run over to my father and kick him awake, creating a clanking sound. "I'm up already! Calm down!" He exclaims in an annoyed voice. "Calm down, Christopher!"

"Sorry, I'm just so excited to finally see the canyons!" I say. His eye rotates and changes color.

"Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me. If we want to make it before sunset we should get going now." Wasting no time, we set out through the forest, our footfalls scaring away small animals as we walk.

About an hour into our trek, I ask, "Father, will you tell me the story of my grandfather again?"

"Again?" He asks. His head rotates 180 degrees back to me. His walk slows down, his metal frame turning to face me as his eye remains trained on me.

"Please? I love it so much!"

"Very well, but we'll have to stop to charge in the sun since talking drains my power so quickly. Your grandfather was born many, many, many years ago..."
