direct mail piece from a marketing campaign Cindy Sherman created for Comme des Garcons in 1994. Rather than the usual objects of desire, envy, or aspiration seen in fashion ads, Sherman created a series of repellant and pitiable caricatures to model Rei Kawakubo's clothing. The resulting photographs are a jarring deconstruction of fashion imagery, and of fashion itself, the usually unspoken con icts and contradictions inherent to the industry. The resulting campaign was more like mail art than advertising, but proved to be brilliant marketing nonetheless and has become the template for a ood of art-fashion collaborations in the years since.
