Exhibition Poster, Flying Fortress.Los Angeles: David Stuart Galleries, 1966. 13 3/8 x 18 3/4 inches; offset lithograph on paper. Two short closed tears at edges, skillfully mended by professional restorer.
This is the first printed document of Vija Celmins' career, a poster announement for her first solo exhibition at David Stuart Gallery in 1966. It reproduces at 7/10 scale a 16 x 26 inch oil on canvas painting from the exhibition entitled Flying Fortress, a pivotal early work which was later acquired by The Museum of Modern Art. Celmins graduated from UCLA in 1965 and was based in Los Angeles through the 60s and 70s, then relocated to New York in 1980. Her work was not widely known until the the 90s, when travelling retrospectives, first in the US in 1992, then another in Europe in 1996, established her as major contemporary figure. Ephemera from early in her career is rare.
