Exhibition Poster. Joseph Beuys: I Like America and America Likes Me (Documentation of a Performance at the René Block Gallery, New York, May ‘74)Edinburgh: The Richard Demarco Gallery, 1974. Very good. Offset lithograph on thin paper
31 5/8 x 21 inches,
Poster for an exhibition of documentation of Beuys' performance, I like America and America Likes Me, Beuys' first and only action work performed in the United States, where he had previously refused to travel as an act of protest against the Vietnam War. For several days lived with a wild coyote in a small room in Rene Block newly opend SoHo gallery. Though relativey few people actually saw the performance, it awakened the interest and curiosity of many who heard about it and photographs of Beuys with the coyote are among the most resonant images of Beuys' entire career. A fragile poster printed on very thin paper with striking appearance due to the unusual indigo and sepia-tone inks used in its printing. There is water spot approximately inch in diameter near the top and and 1.5 inch scratch across the posters' surface, but nonetheless an attractive example of a poster of which few survive.
