Untitled [Holiday Card].N.p. Self-published, n.d. . Glossy pink cardstock with central fold, 5 3/4 x 4 inches closed, color photograph affixed to front panel; printed interior. Fine.
Martin Kippenberger's holiday card for 1996, of which a few hundred were produced, and either mailed, or presented personally to friends and colleagues. There is, as usual, no distinction between Kippenberger's private self and the heroically scaled artistic persona he inhabited as an ongoing artistic performance. In the photo he is seated at a cafe table in a sunny plaza, in a tailored suit and tie, and entirely at ease, he is the very picture of suave European gentility. He is radiantly and insufferably self-satisfied, as if silently daring passerby to punch him in the nose. The interior text reads: Wir wünschen allen Weltmeistern und Lullis ein frohes Weinachtsfest und ein gutes Neues Jahr. Hotel Chelsea Cafe Central Restaurant "o.T" und Martin Kippenberger This translates roughly as "We wish all the world champions and all the beautiful people a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." Kippenberger's greeting is sent from establishments where he publicly held court in Cologne, Innsbruck, and Berlin, respectively.
